A fine dining experience

Client Profile

801 Chophouse is a high-end restaurant group, with locations in Kansas City, Des Moines, and Omaha. Known for USDA prime steaks, Berkshire pork chops, Maine lobster, and a tremendous wine list, each location is proudly recognized as some of the best fine dining their respective cities have to offer.

Objectives

801 Chophouse approached us needing to unify their locations’ disparate branding and online presence. The naming scheme among the restaurants varied from Paxton Chop to 801 Steak and Chop, and there were different websites for each. The objective was to design a website that captured the unique experience and characteristics of all three restaurants, while bringing them together in a way emphasized their overall brand and helped to increase regional awareness. Internally, our goal was to bring visitors to the website as close to sampling the dining experience as we could without actually teleporting them to their own private table (which we explored before deeming it too experimental).

Results

We feel that the final site rivals the best fine dining websites out there; it elegantly captures the mood, energy, and caliber of the restaurants.

We helped each location adopt the name 801 Chophouse, but designed the website to allow for visitors to easily explore all three locations. During our discovery work, we noted that people like restaurants to be a part of the community, and part of the appeal of 801 Chophouse is the unique role it plays in each of its respective cities. We decided to prominently place the word “local” in the website’s navigation to reinforce that value. To visually capture the experience of the restaurants, we committed early on to focusing on great content creation – we needed to capture the ambiance of the room and the look of the dishes in pristine detail. We accomplished this through custom photography and videography, using the video to transition between sections and give the website a great sense of space and movement. To read more about our creative process in designing and developing the 801 Chophouse website, please read our Design Lead’s article that discusses it here.

Unifying all three locations has helped 801 Chophouse increase its brand recognition across the Midwest. The site receives tremendous traffic, which has helped the restaurants to thrive, even through tough economic times. The Kansas City location, for example, has grown from a new restaurant in Kansas City’s Power & Light District to one of the downtown areas most well-known dining experiences, with another location in Leawood, KS opening soon.

Client Quote

"I believe Johnny Lightning Strikes Again is the best Kansas City has to offer. Using anyone else would be a complete waste of time and money." — Christopher Dennis / Executive Chef (read his full review here).
